Matthieu RICARD (Born in 1946) Women in a village learning to read and write, Jharkhand, India, 2017 Art print, UltraChrome HDX pigment inks, Epson Premium Glossy paper, mounted on 2mm Dibond 60 x 65 cm Label on the back of the mounting. This exhibition print may show slight marks or imperfections. Proceeds from the sale of this print will benefit the Karuna Shechen Association and its relief programs for victims of the August 26, 2026, floods in Nepal. Women in a village in the state of Jharkhand, India, are learning to read and write. Jharkhand is primarily populated by tribal communities who have often been displaced, as this state is India’s richest in mineral resources, which are exploited by large corporations. Most of the tribes have now left the forests to live in very well-maintained and beautifully decorated villages. Karuna-Shechen is working to improve the living conditions of the residents through: medical care, rainwater harvesting, literacy and vocational training for adult women, cooperative play-based education programs in preschool classrooms, the creation of sixty thousand vegetable gardens to supplement the existing diet, and other initiatives.
