The translation is attributed to Jacques Gibelin. This first publication includes only the portion of the autobiographical account up to 1731; it is supplemented by a summary of Franklin’s political life and various documents. Addressed to his son, this account traces Franklin’s formative years and his early career in printing. Its emphasis on work, education, and personal improvement has made it one of the seminal works of American autobiographical literature.
