VILLETTE (Claude). THE REASONS FOR THE RITES AND CEREMONIES PERFORMED IN THE CATHOLIC, APOSTOLIC, AND ROMAN CHURCH. Included are The Reasons for the Ceremonies of the Coronation of Our Kings of France, and the Twelve Unique Marks of Their Heavenly Kingship, Above All the Kings of the World. Paris, Guillaume Des Ruës, 1611 [in the colophon: François Jacquin, 1611]. In-quarto, marbled brown calfskin, ribbed spine decorated with gilt scrolls and fleurons, speckled edges (17th-century binding); (2) preliminary leaves [of 3], 1,076 pp. [the last page incorrectly numbered “1,074”], (18) leaves. Headbands damaged with losses, a slight tear beginning at the joints but very strong stitching; corner loss on the title leaf, partially lined, water stains and soiling on the title page, small hole at the top of the title leaf with loss of one letter, inner margins of the first two leaves reinforced. MISSING: the first dedication leaf, corresponding to the second preliminary leaf. FIRST EDITION of this treatise by Claude Villette, canon of Saint-Marcel in Paris, devoted to the EXPLANATION OF THE OFFICES AND CEREMONIES OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH, as well as to the rites of coronation and the sacred nature of the French monarchy. Title printed in red and black; woodcut typographic mark, headpieces, initials, and tailpieces; numerous decorative borders. An old handwritten inscription, now crossed out, on the title page and a blue “Ex-libris Y. Le Petit” stamp on the first endpaper. The spine bears the title “Epistres de Sales,” which is unrelated to the work, suggesting a possible rebinding, though it is very well executed.
