A few old handwritten annotations in the margins. A COLLECTION OF TWO RARE WORKS ON SCHOLASTIC THEOLOGY PRINTED IN PARIS IN 1514 AND 1527. The FIRST VOLUME is a commentary on the fourth book of Peter Lombard’s “Sentences” by the Dominican theologian Peter de la PALUD (c. 1277–1342), Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem. An edition revised and expanded by Vincent of Haarlem, who incorporated additions drawn from manuscripts that were absent from the earlier Venetian printing. Printed in Gothic type in two columns, with woodcut headpieces and initials. The title is printed in red and black within a rich, woodcut architectural frame, adorned with François Regnault’s elephant mark. TWO REMARKABLE WOODCUTS on ff. 188 and 189, depicting “THE TREE OF CONSANGUINITY” (Arbor Consanguinitatis) and “THE TREE OF AFFINITY” (Arbor Affinitatis), illustrating the degrees of kinship and canonical impediments to marriage. The SECOND WORK compiles the treatises on scholastic theology by ADRIAN VI (1459–1523), a former professor at the University of Leuven who became pope in 1522, accompanied by those of Jean Briard d’Ath, a theologian from the same university. New Parisian edition, adorned with a title page set within an architectural frame engraved on wood, bearing the printer’s mark of Jean Petit. Printed in two columns, with ornate initials. INTERESTING COPY preserved in an antique binding on wooden boards, complete with all its leaves, combining two works printed in the early 16th century. Provenance: blue-ink stamps from a religious library, bearing, in particular, the inscriptions “Domus Studiorum” and “Prov. Galliae” - Bibliographic references: BP16, no. 102599 (Pierre de la Palud, 1514) and no. 105296 (Adrian VI, 1527) - Renouard, “Chronological Inventory of 16th-Century Parisian Editions,” III, no. 1117 (second edition).
