Two volumes, in-4, in red morocco leather, with a gilt scroll framing the covers and the bookplate “Madame Comét” in the center, spine with five raised bands decorated with scrolls, gold fillets, and fleurons; title and volume number in gold; gold-filleted edges and caps; gold scroll on the inside of the spine; gilt edges (contemporary binding). Scratches on the upper cover of Volume 1 and a few dark spots on the bindings; scattered foxing, sometimes pronounced. BEAUTIFUL ILLUSTRATED EDITION with 75 plates (excluding title pages) engraved with a burin by Jacques-Louis PETIT (1760–1812), based on the most famous paintings of the Italian, French, and Flemish schools. BEAUTIFUL COPY IN STRICTLY PERIOD-STYLE DECORATED MOROCCO LEATHER, bearing on the front covers the gilt bookplate “Madame Comét,” an unidentified owner. ¶ Brunet, III, 1077–78: “A fine edition of this highly regarded work; it is adorned with 75 rather lovely engravings, based on the principal paintings of the three schools relevant to the text.
