Robert Kushner. Poppies and Mock Orange. Four double-sheet-sized ink drawings, some with watercolor. 1990. 33 × 25 cm. Signed and dated. Folded and stapled, bound in a one-of-a-kind, multicolored inlaid leather binding by Jonathan Hammer. Presented in an original two-tone silk slipcase. Auction start time: approx. 4:56 p.m. (Schedule subject to change) A one-of-a-kind book by the two artists, representing one of the most intense collaborations between Kushner and Hammer. - Signed and dated by the artist at the end of the book. - “As time passes, it would appear that I represent rather of an anomaly within the ‘book’ world. Neither a publisher of editions, per se, nor a craft bookbinder alone, I believe my work is best characterized as the effort of a collaborative artist. In accordance with this, I seem to have a much higher profile within the established ‘art’ community than within its ‘book’ counterpart. There are, however, many exceptions to this. || My collaborative books, as you know, are unique objects. Both the works on paper inside and the bindings are one-of-a-kind. The projects, as conceived by me, are intended to achieve a cohesive sense of a related body of work with each artist.” (Letter to Rolf Renker, 1992). - The cover features colored leather appliqués on both covers as “illustrations,” along with gold-embossed stamps, lines, and letters. Signed “Hammer 90” in gold-embossed letters on the inside back cover. - Endpapers made of colored paper with black overpainting; inside covers lined with black leather and salmon-colored suede panels. - Insert: Letter and “Artist’s statement” by Jonathan Hammer to Rolf Renker (July 5, 1992). - The book is in immaculate condition. 34.0 × 25.3 cm. [8] pages. - The spine of the slipcase has faded; the edges are slightly stained. English description: Four double-sheet-sized ink drawings, some with watercolor accents. 1990. 33 × 25 cm.
