Joan Miró. Ubu aux Baléares. Paris, Teriade 1971. With 32 lithographs, 24 of which are in color—one serving as the title page and 23 signed—and eight in monochrome, one of which is on the case. Loose sheets in an original linen case. Call time: approx. 4:06 p.m. (schedule subject to change) One of 120 copies; an additional six were published “hors commerce.” - Contents: Title lithograph, 6 sheets of text and one illustration, lithographed from Miró’s handwriting or drawing, the 23 signed color lithographs, and the printing and edition note. - The title lithograph is dated as early as 1963. “In the early 1970s, Tériade and Miró collaborated once again on the theme of Ubu. Thanks to the collection of drawings and sketches that the artist donated to the Joan Miró Foundation, we can see how often he returned to certain themes. This was also true of Ubu, the play that, as Miró said, had made such an impression on him. The Foundation owns the 1921 edition of Jarry’s *Ubu Roi*, which Miró undoubtedly read in the 1920s and discussed with his friends from the Surrealist group. In addition to the book, Miró donated sketches, studies, notes, and some rather crude phrases scribbled on scraps of paper—all relating to the grotesque character created by Jarry and his unusual surroundings. This material—which is nothing more than a collection of folksy Mallorcan sayings with a somewhat mischievous tone, perfectly suited to the peculiarities of the character, in whom instinctive functions gain the upper hand over reason—served as the basis for *Ubu aux Baléares* and *L’Enfance d’Ubu*, which were published in 1971 and 1975, respectively.” (Translated from Rosa Maria Malet).—See Cat. Nos. 318 and 329. Cramer 146. - Mourlot 757–788. - Monod 8224 35.5 × 50.0 cm. [34] sheets, 2 of which are blank. - Case with light edge wear. - Light foxing throughout; the title lithograph, 4 signed lithographs, and the text lithographs are more heavily affected.
