Boris Kleint. Pictorial poem with dots. Oil on canvas, mounted on hardboard. 1941. 15.8 × 18.7 cm. Signed and dated; titled, dated again, and inscribed on the reverse. Announcement time: approx. 12:21 (Schedule subject to change) In this charming small format, a condensed version, as it were, of Kleint’s visual worlds at that time. After a six-year stint as an assistant at the Psychological Institute of Frankfurt University, Kleint took “the leap from secure, promising stability into the uncertainty of art.” At first, I worked only part-time at the Städelschule, where Fritz Wichert welcomed me warmly. He sent me to Peter Roehl’s preparatory course, where little of Roehl’s Bauhaus training was evident. During lengthy conversations about art, Lisker advised me to study under Itten.” (quoted from https://institut-aktuelle-kunst.de/kuenstlerlexikon/kleint-boris). — The “dot paintings” were created in 1941—Kleint had previously visited Picasso and Kandinsky in Paris. It was not until after the end of the war that he found recognition in Germany, along with opportunities to teach and exhibit. - On the reverse, a dedication reading “for Mrs. Ruth Klein,” the wife of the Berlin-based (and later Baden-based) publisher Woldemar Klein.
