Evert Marinus van Ojen. Cafe Unie in Rotterdam, architect J. J. P. Oud. Photograph. 1925. Gelatin silver print, vintage. 22.0 × 15.5 cm. Inscribed on the back. Call time: approx. 12:10 (Schedule subject to change) E. M. van Ojen (1888–1964) produced the most significant photographs of Dutch modernist architecture, including works by the De Stijl architect Oud. The “Café de Unie,” with its graphic division of the façade, was originally intended only as a temporary structure in a vacant lot for about ten years, but stood until its destruction by a German bombing raid on Rotterdam in 1940. In 1985, the façade was reconstructed (at a different location).—The uncropped print shown here served as the basis for an illustration and is labeled on the reverse as “Café in Rotterdam || semi-permanent (10 years), plaster and wood, 1925,” as well as “Architect J. J. P. Oud” and the reproduction detail “6 cm wide.” - Contemporary illustration of this photograph: *Die Form*. Journal for Design Work, Issue 4, 1926, p. 79. Ink stains in the lower left corner.
