ZDENĚK RYKR (CZECH / BOHEMIAN 1900 - 1940) - Landscape from Chyše *** DESCRIPTION OF THE LOT: *** Date: dated 1919 Technique: oil on canvas Dimensions: 46 × 55 cm Signature: top left Framed: framed Note: reproduced: Zdeněk Rykr 1900 - 1940: Elegy of the Avant-Garde (exhibition catalogue). Prague: Prague City Gallery, 2000 Lot information: A rare and exceptionally attractive example of early work by one of the most versatile and original artists of the Czech avant-garde, Zdeněk Rykr (1900–1940). The canvas dates from the crucial year of 1919, when Rykr, after graduating from high school, began working as a private tutor to the young Count Prokop Lažanský at the Chyšy castle near Žlutice (where, coincidentally, Karel Čapek had also worked in the same role two years earlier). This stay marked a crucial stage in his formation – he broke free from the influence of academic teaching and created a series of distinctive expressive landscape paintings. The formal morphology of the works from this year already anticipates the artist's rapid transition to synthetic cubism and neoclassicism of the early 1920s. __________________________________________________________________________ Bidders are obliged to inform themselves about the condition of the lots before the auction, subsequent complaints will not be taken into account.
