FERDINAND KUSCHEL (GERMANY / GERMAN 1899 - 1966) - Mizzi *** DESCRIPTION OF THE LOT: *** Date: 1930 Technique: painted ceramics Dimensions: 25,5 cm (height) Signature: marked with a monogram Lot information: About the author: Ferdinand Kuschel (1899 - 1966) was a Czech sculptor and painter of German nationality. He was born into the butcher family of Ferdinand Kuschel the Elder (1863–1930) and his wife Ludmila, née Badstieberová (1870–1946), who came from a family of local freight forwarders. The family lived for many years in Šternberk in the family house at Olomoucká Street No. 74 [1], near the burgher shooting range (since 1914 the National House of the Czech Minority). The whole family professed German nationality and the Roman Catholic Church. Ferdinand had three younger sisters. He graduated from elementary and middle school in Šternberk. In September 1916, at the age of seventeen, he entered the first year of the vocational school for stone processing in Supíkovice near Jeseník, then with the official title K. und k. Fachschule für Steinbearbeitung in Saubsdorf. Although he finished his studies due to compulsory military service on March 6, 1917, it can be assumed that he had mastered the basics of stonework. After the war, he began an apprenticeship with the Czech sculptor Julio Pelikán in Olomouc.[2] In October 1922, he went to study in Vienna, where he received a scholarship at the Vienna Academy for a three-year study of general sculpture, which he completed with Prof. Josef Müllner and in 1924-1927 with Prof. Hans Bitterlich. There, his left-wing civic thinking as a social democrat took shape, but he was not politically organized.[3] Influenced by the Art Nouveau foundations of his training and the emerging style of modern sculpture, he created a bust of Johann Strauss the Younger in 1925, which strongly resembles the Viennese monument by Edmund Hellmer. He received a special Academy Award for his sculptures The Sufferer, The Resurrection, and The Crucified, which are known only from period photographs. __________________________________________________________________________ Bidders are obliged to inform themselves about the condition of the lots before the auction, subsequent complaints will not be taken into account.
