Chanel, Paris–Bombay Métiers d’Art, by Karl Lagerfeld. A multicoloured tweed jacket in burgundy, pink, black and gold, Paris–Bombay Métiers d’Art, P44, of mandarain collar, frontsal side-seam pockets with decorative gold-tone and red buttons, buttoned cuff tabs, further detailed with burgundy silk lining, the exterior is 52% wool, 23% viscose, 18% polyester, 5% polyamide and 2% cupro, of French size 34. Grade B Notes: Chanel’s Paris–Bombay Métiers d’Art collection for 2011/12, brought Karl Lagerfeld’s imagined vision of India into dialogue with the house’s Parisian identity. Presented at the Grand Palais in December 2011, it combined familiar Chanel tweeds with gilded lace, lustrous silks, elaborate embroidery and cascading pearls. The richly decorated setting echoed the splendour of the clothes, creating an atmosphere of a lavish palace banquet. The Métiers d’Art collections celebrate the specialist craftspeople whose expertise contributes to Chanel’s creations. Paris–Bombay was particularly notable for its interpretation of Indian-inspired ornament through the work of Chanel’s ateliers in Paris, placing craftsmanship at the centre of the collection’s cultural and visual exchange. The present jacket’s burgundy, pink and gold palette, standing collar and decorative buttons echo this dialogue between classic Chanel tailoring and richly ornamental dress. Its textured tweed provides a restrained foundation for the jewel-like accents, making it an evocative comparison with the collection’s aesthetic.
