Width x Height: 160 x 160 cm Literature: DesignerFashionStyle, ‘Chanel Metiers d’Art Scotland’, December 2012, online blog, illustrating the guest seating and discussing the Chanel blankets supplied for the Paris–Édimbourg Métiers d’Art presentation at Linlithgow Palac; [Link Here] Notes: Chanel’s Paris–Édimbourg Métiers d’Art collection for 2012/13, explored the Scottish influences woven into the house’s history. Presented in December 2012 within the ruins of Linlithgow Palace, birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots, Karl Lagerfeld’s collection brought together the practicality of Highland dress and the theatrical elegance of historical costume. Tartan, tweed, Fair Isle knitwear and argyle patterns appeared alongside kilt-inspired silhouettes, feathered accessories and romantic white gowns. The Scottish setting carried a personal connection to Gabrielle Chanel. During her relationship with the Duke of Westminster in the 1920s, she spent time at his Scottish estates, adopting elements of his sporting wardrobe, including tweed jackets. Her subsequent collaboration with British textile manufacturers helped transform this practical fabric into softer, lighter materials for her own tailoring. Paris–Édimbourg revisited that exchange between menswear, outdoor clothing and feminine elegance, drawing attention to a formative influence on Chanel’s enduring identity. The atmosphere extended beyond the garments. Fires illuminated the palace’s open-air setting, while Chanel blankets were supplied at guests’ seats against the winter cold. This detail made warmth and texture part of the audience’s experience, echoing the enveloping knitwear and substantial fabrics of the collection itself. The present blanket’s tartan ground and embroidered thistle offer an evocative connection to this Scottish theme, bringing together a recognisable national emblem and Chanel’s interlocking CC motif.
