868 - Large Chinese export famille rose charger, Yongzheng ca. 1725-30. Decorated along the center with a pair of Mandarin ducks swimming through a rippling lotus pond surrounded by a yellow spearhead band. The border with eight Daoist Immortals carrying attributes and riding vessels forming rafts on a billowing sea. The back of the plate with four iron-red flowers. Illustrated in Howard, "Choice of the Private Trader," pg. 65, no. 42. Provenance: Christie's, London, "Fine Chinese Export Porcelain and Works of Art," 20 March 1985, Lot 176; The Distinguished Collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff. Lot Essay: This plate was likely a wedding gift as the Mandarin duck symbolizes marital bliss as the waterfowl mate for life. Combined with the encircling immortals, it references the proverb "I envy the mandarin ducks, not the immortals," which expresses a deep desire for true, devoted love over eternal life. Diameter: 15 1/2 in.
