Chinese export porcelain famille rose figural group depicting a seated lady holding a small dog with an rocky outcrop containing a peacock, Qianlong ca. 1750. Illustrated in Howard, "Choice of the Private Trader," p. 254-5, no. 302. Provenance: The Chinese Porcelain Company, New York, NY, 12 June 1987; The Distinguished Collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff. Here offered is a mirrored example of this lot, painted similarly, possibly the mirror pair to this lot. Lot Essay: She is seated on a rockwork plinth with a spaniel-like dog in her arms. A peacock peeps from a rock nearby. Enameled richly in green, pale blue, brown, rose, and turquoise. Likely once a pair, this group is emblematic of life in China and by the early 1740s, European factories were also producing a variety of chinoiserie figures in similar poses. They were not produced in large numbers but had considerable variety from China merchants in Canton, suggesting creation according to taste. Height: 9 in x width: 7 in x depth: 4 1/2 in.
