Ⓟ CHRISTIAN CAILLARD (1899–1985) "Peasant Woman in the Rice Field" Oil on canvas Signed lower right Wooden frame 60 x 78 cm CHRISTIAN CAILLARD (1899-1985) “Rural Woman in the Rice Field” Oil on canvas Signed lower right Wooden frame 60 x 78 cm Christian Caillard, a French painter born in 1899 in the Montmartre neighborhood to a family of artists. Developing an interest in drawing at a very young age, he created his first works at the age of fifteen, thanks to a box of paints given to him by his uncle, the novelist Henri Barbusse. Drafted during World War I, he was discharged in 1921 and decided to devote himself entirely to painting. He enrolled at the Académie Billoul that same year and attended the Grande Chaumière, where he further developed his artistic practice. Caillard discovered Vietnam following a long journey around the world between 1929 and 1932, which also took him to Bali, Tahiti, and Martinique. He spent three months in Hué, an opportunity for him to create paintings—as evidenced by this work—that capture the very essence of rural Vietnam. His works feature human figures in the foreground while allowing the viewer’s gaze to drift toward the landscapes in the background. In 1961, a retrospective at the Durand-Ruel Gallery introduced his work to a wider audience. Caillard died in 1985, leaving behind a rich body of work comprising more than two thousand paintings, now scattered among public and private collections in France and abroad. Christian Caillard was a French painter, born in 1899 in the Montmartre district to a family with a tradition of art. He showed an early interest in painting and created his first works at the age of 15, after his uncle, the novelist Henri Barbusse, gave him a box of paints. After serving in World War I, he was discharged in 1921 and decided to devote his life to painting. That same year, he studied at the Billoul Academy and frequently visited the Grande Chaumière studio, where he continually honed his artistic techniques. Caillard discovered Vietnam during a round-the-world trip that lasted from 1929 to 1932, taking him through places such as Bali, Tahiti, and Martinique. He stayed in Huế for three months, a period that allowed him to create many paintings, including the one on display here. The work captures the spirit and rustic beauty of rural Vietnamese life. In his paintings, Caillard often depicts people in the foreground while expanding the view toward the expansive landscapes in the background, creating a harmony between human figures and nature. In 1961, a retrospective exhibition at the Durand-Ruel Gallery helped bring his artistic career to a wider public. Christian Caillard passed away in 1985, leaving behind a rich artistic legacy of more than 2,000 paintings, which are now held in public and private collections in France and many other countries.
