Erkin Alakbarli, Azerbaijani (B. 1992- ) Outcast, 2020 Oil on canvas 206 x 84 cm Erkin Alakbarli (b. 1992, Baku, Azerbaijan) is multidisciplinary an Azerbaijani artist whose practice encompasses painting, conceptual art, installation, and mixed media. He received both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Painting, specializing in Monumental Painting, from the Azerbaijan State Academy of Arts. Active in the contemporary art scene since 2009, Alakbarli has developed a distinctive artistic language that combines expressive painting with sculptural elements, textured surfaces, and unconventional materials. Since 2017, he has been a member of the Union of Artists of Azerbaijan. Over the course of his career, Alakbarli has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions, international art fairs, symposiums, and artist residencies. His solo exhibition Ad Infinitum was presented at YARAT Artim Project Space in Baku in 2022, while his works have also been exhibited at the Heydar Aliyev Centre, United Nations Office in Geneva, Tbilisi Art Fair, Zaman Gallery, and the Azerbaijan Painting Museum of the 20th–21st Centuries. His participation in international symposiums and residencies has further expanded his multidisciplinary practice and experimental approach to contemporary art. Alakbarli's works are included in the permanent collection of the Baku Museum of Modern Art and in private collections across Bulgaria, Switzerland, the United States, Germany, Georgia, and Russia. Through a practice that merges painting with installation and conceptual thinking, he continues to investigate new visual languages while contributing to the development of contemporary Azerbaijani art on the international stage. Erkin Alakbarli's artistic practice explores the dynamic balance between order and chaos through painting, conceptual art, and large-scale installations. Combining expressive textures with materials such as metal wire, acrylic, and mixed media, he develops works that extend beyond the traditional boundaries of painting, transforming the surface into a tactile and emotionally charged space. Deeply rooted in personal history and the experiences of those around him, his practice investigates themes of memory, vulnerability, resilience, and the complexity of human relationships. Rather than documenting specific narratives, Alakbarli translates emotional states into visual forms that invite viewers to engage through their own experiences and interpretations. His works emphasize the physicality of materials as an essential part of their conceptual meaning, creating a dialogue between texture, form, and emotion. By merging painterly expression with sculptural elements, Alakbarli seeks to create immersive visual experiences that encourage contemplation while ensuring that the viewer remains emotionally connected rather than indifferent.
