RAFAEL DURANCAMPS (Sabadell, 1891 – Barcelona, 1979). “Harbor Scene,” 1943. Sepia ink and wash with touches of color on paper. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. With a handwritten dedication to Josefina Canti. Frame with a label from La Pinacoteca, Paseo de Gracia, 34, Barcelona. In good overall condition. The frame shows some scuffing. Measurements: 12 × 16 cm; 32.5 × 35.5 cm (frame). Provenance: Estate of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Artistic and heritage collection originating in the legacy of Catalan painters Ramon Martí Alsina (1826–1894), a seminal figure of 19th-century Catalan Realism, and his son Ricard Martí Aguiló (1857–1935). Passed down and enriched across successive generations, the collection brings together works from the original holdings of both artists alongside acquisitions made by their descendants. Dedicated to preserving and recovering the family legacy, the descendants actively reacquired works by the painters as they entered the market, progressively expanding the collection to encompass paintings, sculptures, archaeological artifacts, and other items of artistic and historical significance. Dated 1943, a few years after Durancamps’ return from Paris to Barcelona, this work encapsulates the graphic fluidity and sensibility for landscape that characterize an essential part of his body of work. The scene is constructed with remarkable economy of means: trees, boats, and the human figure are defined by quick, confident lines, while sepia washes create depth and atmosphere. The sparse accents of color introduce points of intensity within a composition dominated by the spontaneity of the drawing. The small format reinforces the work’s immediacy, reminiscent of a sketch made from life. Durancamps focused particularly on landscape and still life, deliberately staying on the sidelines of the avant-garde movements and developing a personal figurative language rooted in careful observation and the pictorial tradition. Rafael Durancamps was a student of Joan Vila Cinca and was decisively influenced by Joaquim Mir during his early career. He held his first solo exhibition at the Galeries Laietanes in 1917 and, beginning in 1926, resided in Paris, where he opened the gallery La Fenêtre Ouverte; after the outbreak of World War II, he returned to Barcelona and alternated his artistic activity with stays in Cadaqués. He exhibited regularly in Barcelona, particularly at the Sala Parés. His work is represented in the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya, the Museu d’Art de Sabadell, and the Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection, among other collections.
