20th-Century Catalan School. "Landscape with a Farmhouse." Oil on canvas. Signed “MASSÓ” in the lower right corner. In good overall condition. Measurements: 54 × 65 cm; 61 × 72 cm (frame). Provenance: Estate of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Artistic and heritage collection originating in the legacy of Catalan painters Ramon Martí Alsina (1826–1894), a seminal figure of 19th-century Catalan Realism, and his son Ricard Martí Aguiló (1857–1935). Passed down and enriched across successive generations, the collection brings together works from the original holdings of both artists alongside acquisitions made by their descendants. Dedicated to preserving and recovering the family legacy, the descendants actively reacquired works by the painters as they entered the market, progressively expanding the collection to encompass paintings, sculptures, archaeological artifacts, and other items of artistic and historical significance. The chromatic intensity and textural treatment place this work within the Mediterranean tradition of 20th-century Catalan landscape painting. The artist constructs the scene using short, dense brushstrokes, which fragment the surface into small masses of color and give light an essential role in shaping the landscape. The range of pinks, ochres, greens, and yellows departs from a strictly naturalistic representation to enhance the work’s overall chromatic vibrancy. The architecture is integrated into the landscape through this same painterly treatment, establishing a balance between geometry and vegetation that brings the work closer to the Post-Impressionist interpretations of the Mediterranean landscape.
