Attributed to ERNEST DAGONET (France, 1856–1926). “Landscape.” Oil on canvas. Measurements: 18 x 27 cm; 26.5 x 35.5 cm (frame). Provenance: Estate of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Artistic and heritage collection originating in the legacy of Catalan painters Ramon Martí Alsina (1826–1894), a seminal figure of 19th-century Catalan Realism, and his son Ricard Martí Aguiló (1857–1935). Passed down and enriched across successive generations, the collection brings together works from the original holdings of both artists alongside acquisitions made by their descendants. Dedicated to preserving and recovering the family legacy, the descendants actively reacquired works by the painters as they entered the market, progressively expanding the collection to encompass paintings, sculptures, archaeological artifacts, and other items of artistic and historical significance. Ernest Dagonet was a prominent sculptor associated with the academic and naturalist traditions. Although he also worked in watercolor, his artistic recognition is primarily due to his sculptural work. He trained under Jean-Paul Laurens and Augustin Moreau-Vauthier, and developed a prolific career focused on portraiture, animal sculpture, and allegorical, religious, and historical compositions. He regularly participated in the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris, where he received various awards, and was honored with a bronze medal at the 1889 Paris World’s Fair and a silver medal at the 1900 World’s Fair. Among his most notable works are *La Nuit*, a marble sculpture acquired by the French government for the Senate Palace; *Ève* (1895), part of the collections of the Musée d’Orsay; and the funerary monument dedicated to the painter Jean-Baptiste Greuze in the Montmartre Cemetery. His work is characterized by his mastery of modeling, anatomical precision, and the expressiveness of his figures—qualities that are particularly evident in his animal sculptures and portraits.
