Spanish School, late 19th–early 20th century. "Portrait of a Woman." Oil on canvas. Signed (illegible) in the lower right corner. In good overall condition, with subtle surface alterations. The frame has some damage. Measurements: 56 × 48 cm; 79.5 × 71.5 cm (frame). Provenance: Estate of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Artistic and heritage collection originating in the legacy of Catalan painters Ramon Martí Alsina (1826–1894), a seminal figure of 19th-century Catalan Realism, and his son Ricard Martí Aguiló (1857–1935). Passed down and enriched across successive generations, the collection brings together works from the original holdings of both artists alongside acquisitions made by their descendants. Dedicated to preserving and recovering the family legacy, the descendants actively reacquired works by the painters as they entered the market, progressively expanding the collection to encompass paintings, sculptures, archaeological artifacts, and other items of artistic and historical significance. An intimate portrait, executed with a restrained style and a notable focus on the psychological characterization of the model. The figure emerges against a dark, neutral background—a technique that draws attention to the face, rendered with greater definition and luminosity than the rest of the composition. The restrained brushwork and the palette of earth tones, blacks, and ochres—enriched by the reflections on the shawl—place the work within the realist tradition of Spanish portraiture from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Of particular interest is the subject’s serene and direct expression, as well as the careful rendering of the skin tones and signs of aging, which lend naturalism and personality to the work as a whole.
