AURELIO TOLOSA Y ALSINA (Barcelona, 1861–1938). “Farmhouse by the River.” Oil on panel. Signed in the lower right corner and on the reverse. Measurements: 21 x 33 cm; 44 x 56 cm (frame). Provenance: Estate of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Artistic and heritage collection originating in the legacy of Catalan painters Ramon Martí Alsina (1826–1894), a seminal figure of 19th-century Catalan Realism, and his son Ricard Martí Aguiló (1857–1935). Passed down and enriched across successive generations, the collection brings together works from the original holdings of both artists alongside acquisitions made by their descendants. Dedicated to preserving and recovering the family legacy, the descendants actively reacquired works by the painters as they entered the market, progressively expanding the collection to encompass paintings, sculptures, archaeological artifacts, and other items of artistic and historical significance. Aurelio Tolosa began his training with the French painter Justin Simon and later studied under Modest Urgell. He devoted himself primarily to painting flowers and landscapes, in addition to creating various designs for stained-glass windows. He participated in several exhibitions held in Barcelona, as well as competitions and group shows such as the 1883 Liceo Exhibition, where he presented “A Countryside” and “A Seascape.” He later received awards for his landscapes and still lifes of flowers at the Barcelona exhibitions of 1891 and 1892. He also took part in the National Exhibitions of 1890, 1892, and 1897 (honorable mention), presenting his works “Peonies,” “Dawn,” “April Flowers,” and “Carnations.” He was also honored with an honorable mention at the National Exhibitions of 1901 and 1904. In 1918, he exhibited some of his most important works, including “Spring,” “Morning Sun,” and “Washerwomen of Cadaqués.” Also noteworthy is his participation in the group exhibitions held at the Galerías Layetanas in 1922 and 1927. He was also a member of the Artistic and Literary Society of Catalonia and received a gold medal and a diploma of honor at the International Furniture Exhibition. Furthermore, Antoni Clavé began his career in Tolosa’s decorative and advertising painting studio. Tolosa also devoted himself to the imitation of old master paintings, tapestries, and enamel work. His works are currently represented in the Parliament of the Balearic Islands, as well as in various private collections.
