19th-century French school. “Seascape.” Oil on canvas. With patches. Measurements: 56 x 69 cm; 73 x 86.5 cm (frame). Provenance: Estate of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Artistic and heritage collection originating in the legacy of Catalan painters Ramon Martí Alsina (1826–1894), a seminal figure of 19th-century Catalan Realism, and his son Ricard Martí Aguiló (1857–1935). Passed down and enriched across successive generations, the collection brings together works from the original holdings of both artists alongside acquisitions made by their descendants. Dedicated to preserving and recovering the family legacy, the descendants actively reacquired works by the painters as they entered the market, progressively expanding the collection to encompass paintings, sculptures, archaeological artifacts, and other items of artistic and historical significance. The scene captures with remarkable intensity the ever-changing and powerful nature of the seascape, one of the major themes of 19th-century Romantic painting. A three-masted ship sails alongside the pier as the waves crash forcefully against the shore and several figures watch its arrival, introducing a lively narrative dimension. Above them stretches an imposing, cloud-covered sky, rendered through broad gradations of gray that open up in the center to give way to intense brightness. This interplay between storm and light lends the composition depth and drama, while the looser brushstrokes used on the water effectively convey the movement of the waves and the foam. The careful combination of atmospheric effects, harbor activity, and turbulent nature places the work within the tradition of the French Romantic seascape, in which the landscape ceases to be a mere backdrop and becomes the true emotional protagonist of the painting.
