19th-century English school. "View of the entrance to Carisbrooke Castle, Isle of Wight." Oil on canvas. With a partially illegible inscription in the lower left corner. Shows signs of previous restoration work visible on the reverse. Measurements: 62 × 84 cm; 83.5 × 105 cm (frame). Provenance: Estate of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Artistic and heritage collection originating in the legacy of Catalan painters Ramon Martí Alsina (1826–1894), a seminal figure of 19th-century Catalan Realism, and his son Ricard Martí Aguiló (1857–1935). Passed down and enriched across successive generations, the collection brings together works from the original holdings of both artists alongside acquisitions made by their descendants. Dedicated to preserving and recovering the family legacy, the descendants actively reacquired works by the painters as they entered the market, progressively expanding the collection to encompass paintings, sculptures, archaeological artifacts, and other items of artistic and historical significance. This work depicts a view of the entrance to Carisbrooke Castle on the Isle of Wight (England), dominated by its monumental medieval fortified gate and the outer arch erected during the reign of Elizabeth I. The composition is structured around an ascending path along which small figures pass, set among historic architecture, rock formations, and masses of vegetation. The use of chiaroscuro, the atmospheric depth, and the luminosity of the sky lend the scene a picturesque and evocative character. The painting is part of the tradition of 19th-century British Romantic landscape painting, which took a particular interest in medieval ruins and monuments linked to national history. Carisbrooke Castle, famous for having served as a prison for King Charles I, was a recurring subject for artists and engravers of the time, including John Martin, J. M. W. Turner, and Frederick Calvert. The work combines a topographical interest in historical architecture with a scenic interpretation of the landscape, in which the presence of human figures accentuates the monumentality of the scene as a whole.
