A follower of BARTOLOMÉ ESTEBAN MURILLO (1617–1682). Spanish School, late 17th century – 18th century. “The Virgin as a Child” Oil on canvas. Restored. Label on the reverse. Measurements: 51.5 x 46.5 cm; 58 x 54 cm (frame). Provenance: Estate of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Artistic and heritage collection originating in the legacy of Catalan painters Ramon Martí Alsina (1826–1894), a seminal figure of 19th-century Catalan Realism, and his son Ricard Martí Aguiló (1857–1935). Passed down and enriched across successive generations, the collection brings together works from the original holdings of both artists alongside acquisitions made by their descendants. Dedicated to preserving and recovering the family legacy, the descendants actively reacquired works by the painters as they entered the market, progressively expanding the collection to encompass paintings, sculptures, archaeological artifacts, and other items of artistic and historical significance. This painting depicts the Virgin Mary as a child in a half-length composition that focuses attention on the delicacy of her face and the serenity of her expression. The figure, with large dark eyes, softly modeled features, and a full head of hair, is set against a neutral, somber background, dressed in a blue-green tunic and a reddish cloak that she delicately gathers with her hand at chest level. The composition, marked by simplicity and an intimate character, stands out for the idealized treatment of the face, the light skin tones, and the soft modeling of the forms, which are marked by deep hues in the garments and the background. The absence of narrative elements or secondary attributes reinforces the figure’s prominence and encourages close, contemplative viewing, characteristic of small-format devotional painting. The work belongs to the tradition of Spanish devotional painting developed under the influence of Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1617–1682), whose interpretation of Marian subjects—characterized by expressive tenderness, the idealization of figures, and the delicacy of the skin tones, exerted a profound influence on the Sevillian school and its successors during the 17th and 18th centuries. The figure’s facial features bear a resemblance to those of the Virgin in Murillo’s *Virgen del Rosario*, housed in the Museo Nacional del Prado (inv. P000975), particularly in the shape of the face and the expression in her eyes. However, the depiction of Mary during her childhood is not a common subject in the master’s known body of work, with the exception of *The Education of the Virgin*, also housed in the Prado (inv. P000968), where the portrayal of the young Mary differs considerably from that in this composition. The painting can therefore be linked to the work of Murillo’s followers, who drew upon his idealized female models and adapted them to new iconographic formulations, thereby contributing to the dissemination and survival of Murillo’s artistic language in Spanish religious painting.
