Central European school, 18th century. Rural landscape. Oil on canvas. Measurements: 34 x 43 cm; 43 x 52 cm (frame). Provenance: Estate of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Artistic and heritage collection originating in the legacy of Catalan painters Ramon Martí Alsina (1826–1894), a seminal figure of 19th-century Catalan Realism, and his son Ricard Martí Aguiló (1857–1935). Passed down and enriched across successive generations, the collection brings together works from the original holdings of both artists alongside acquisitions made by their descendants. Dedicated to preserving and recovering the family legacy, the descendants actively reacquired works by the painters as they entered the market, progressively expanding the collection to encompass paintings, sculptures, archaeological artifacts, and other items of artistic and historical significance. A humble cart is driving away along a compacted dirt road. The road forms a diagonal line that draws the viewer’s gaze toward a landscape of rolling hills, culminating in distant mountains whose outline blends into the sky due to the light mist covering them. To the right of the path stands a house, of considerable size though simple in design, with linteled windows and a gabled roof, flanked by a garden. The simple structures on the right are hallmarks of the architecture on the left—the tall towers of a castle and the solid walls of a rampart—which lend the landscape a romantic air. An atmosphere of calm and serenity pervades the entire landscape, in which the artist has primarily used a range of earth tones, browns, and grays, which time has slightly softened. The brushwork is fine, almost sketchy, remarkably confident and steady, and capable of suggesting the details—when necessary, as with the figures on the left—with just a few expert strokes.
