LE SIDANER (Henri) (1862–1939). French Post-Impressionist painter. Born in Port-Louis (Mauritius), Henri Le Sidaner is famous for his intimate landscapes, gardens, and scenes bathed in a subtle and poetic light. He was elected a member of the Academy of Fine Arts in 1930. Autograph letter signed “Le Sidaner” to an unidentified correspondent. Gerberoy near Songeons (Oise), undated. 2 pages, in-8 format, in black ink, on a double sheet. A few creases and slight signs of handling. A later annotation in blue pencil appears at the top of the first page. An interesting letter in which Henri Le Sidaner expresses his deep admiration for the poet Paul Fort and his desire to contribute to the tribute organized in his honor. The painter explains to his correspondent a misunderstanding regarding his participation in a fundraising campaign for the poet: “When I sent Paul Fort my money order, the fundraising campaign had not yet begun, but I have since remained determined that my contribution be considered part of this tribute from Paul Fort’s friends.” He warmly affirms his attachment to the poet and his wish to be counted among his supporters: “[…] among whom I will be very happy to be counted, having always held the greatest admiration for the great poet.” Finally, although he was then living in seclusion in the countryside, Le Sidaner promised to take action to rally other supporters: “[...] I will do everything in my power to rally friends and right the injustice still suffered by one of the most exceptional of our French poets.” A beautiful letter attesting to the ties between the French artistic and literary circles, and more specifically to Henri Le Sidaner’s admiration for Paul Fort (1872–1960), a major figure in Symbolist poetry, nicknamed the “Prince of Poets .” It is of particular interest for its committed content—which goes beyond mere polite formalities—and for its explicit reference to a fundraising campaign intended to support or honor Paul Fort.
