LE BAS (Hippolyte) (1782–1867). French architect, professor of architectural history at the École des Beaux-Arts, member of the Institut. Architect of the Notre-Dame-de-Lorette Church in Paris. Autograph document signed “H. Le Bas.” Paris, January 3, 1860. 1 page, in-8. A certificate of commendation issued in favor of his former student Édouard Bachimont, who had studied architecture under his guidance for several years. Le Bas attests to his student’s professional and artistic qualities: “I, the undersigned, certify that Mr. Édouard Bachimont, who studied architecture under my guidance for several years, has consistently distinguished himself through his aptitude for work… ” It recalls Bachimont’s successes at the Imperial School of Fine Arts and highlights his determination to continue his studies despite the difficulties he encountered. Le Bas concludes by affirming that his former student possesses the necessary knowledge to ensure the proper execution of any projects that might be entrusted to him. The document is signed with a mention of the architect’s titles and positions: Government Architect, member of the Institut de France, and professor at the Imperial School of Fine Arts. An interesting account of architecture education in the 19th century and the training of students at the School of Fine Arts during the Second Empire. Some old creases, slight foxing, in good overall condition.
