LAURENS (Jean-Paul) (1838–1921). French painter and sculptor, one of the leading figures in history painting during the second half of the 19th century. Member of the Institut de France, successor to Ernest Meissonier at the Académie des Beaux-Arts, and professor at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Autograph letter signed “J. P. Laurens” to Mr. Dumaine at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Paris, November 20, 1898. 2 pages, in-8 format, in black ink. Autograph envelope, stamped and postmarked. Small collector’s stamp on the letter. An interesting letter of recommendation on behalf of his son, the painter Paul-Albert Laurens (1870–1934), who was then a candidate for a position as drawing instructor at the École Polytechnique. Jean-Paul Laurens asks his correspondent to intercede with his father-in-law, Mr. Haton de la Goupillière, to support his son’s candidacy: “In the ever-vivid memory of our former friendship, I am writing to you about my son Paul Albert, about whom our friend Colin may have already mentioned a few words to you.” He explains the purpose of his request: “My aim is to recommend to Mr. Haton de la Goupillière—your father-in-law—the name of my son, who is a candidate for the position of drawing instructor at the École Polytechnique, and whose fate will be decided by the Council of Improvement.” ” The painter notes that his son is among the top candidates: “My son is among the top two candidates who will be presented to the Minister for approval.” The letter concludes with warm thanks and an assurance of his affectionate regards. This correspondence provides an interesting insight into the networks of recommendation and appointments to art teaching positions in major French institutions at the end of the 19th century. It also highlights Jean-Paul Laurens’ concern for the career of his son Paul-Albert, who would himself go on to pursue a career as a painter and professor. Henri-Félix Haton de la Goupillière (1833–1927), a mining engineer and member of the Academy of Sciences, held several important positions at the École Polytechnique. His standing explains Jean-Paul Laurens’s efforts on behalf of his son. Condition: Generally good condition. Age-related creases, slight signs of handling. Envelope preserved with its postage and postmarks. Collector’s stamp affixed to the letter.
