HÉDOUIN (Pierre) (1789–1868). Born in Boulogne-sur-Mer. Lawyer, man of letters, and musician. Author of historical works, novels, and songs. Autograph letter signed “P. Hédouin” to “Monsieur.” Boulogne-sur-Mer, July 22, 1822. 2 pages, in-4. INTERESTING AUTOGRAPH LETTER CONCERNING MUSIC PUBLISHING, ROMANCES, AND THE TASTES OF FEMALE AUDIENCES DURING THE RESTORATION. Pierre Hédouin writes to his correspondent regarding the publication and distribution of musical compositions. In particular, he mentions the inclusion of two poems and several romances in collections intended for ladies. He expresses his desire to have his compositions included in musical publications: “...include them in the almanac dedicated to ladies, in *L’Écho des Bards*, or in any other work of your choosing... ” Hédouin also mentions his search for a publisher capable of publishing his works and expresses interest in the conditions for making the music available to the public. He alludes to his connections with several correspondents in the literary and musical worlds and specifically mentions collections of French and English romances. He also asks that people be made aware of the possibility of publishing a small edition of Bussy-Rabutin’s *Histoire amoureuse des Gaules*, thus demonstrating his literary and bibliophilic interests. A FASCINATING EXCHANGE ON THE MUSIC TRADE AND THE CIRCULATION OF ROMANCES AND LITERARY COLLECTIONS IN THE 1820s. An interesting document for the history of French music publishing and publications intended for amateurs. Some creases from age and slight signs of handling.
