DUBOIS (Théodore) (1837–1924), French composer, organist, and educator; winner of the Prix de Rome in 1861; future director of the Paris Conservatory from 1896 to 1905. Autograph letter signed “Th. Dubois” to a friend. Paris, December 4, 1882. 1 page, in-8 format, on tinted paper. A lovely, caring letter in which Théodore Dubois encourages his correspondent, who is suffering from a nervous disorder, to rest before resuming his activities. “I received your short letter and ask you not to rush; rest well, and then come see me; you will resume your work when you are fully able to do so without endangering your health. ” The composer goes on to express his concern for his correspondent’s health: “I hope your worries are unfounded and that this nervous condition will not last long. In any case, do not torment yourself, and always be assured of my devoted regards. ” He concludes by sending his regards to his correspondent’s parents and asking that his mother be excused for not having replied to a previous letter. This letter attests to Théodore Dubois’s kindness toward its recipient—presumably a young musician or student—whom he urges to prioritize his health over work. Théodore Dubois served as choirmaster at Sainte-Clotilde Church, then at the Church of La Madeleine, before becoming a professor of composition and director of the Paris Conservatory. A few normal creases and minor signs of age.
