D'INDY (Vincent) (1851–1931) French composer and educator, a student of César Franck and co-founder of the Schola Cantorum in Paris. Autograph letter signed “Vincent d’Indy,” addressed to Narcisse Brument, conductor and librettist. Paris, October 8, 1906. 3 pp. in-4, in black ink, on printed letterhead of the Schola Cantorum, 269 Rue Saint-Jacques, Paris. An important letter concerning the organization of the Schola Cantorum, the duties of its director, and his activities as a composer and conductor. Vincent d’Indy apologizes for his delay in replying and explains the difficulties he faced in accepting an invitation to Algiers, due to his many responsibilities: “Unfortunately, it will be impossible for me to go to Algiers this winter, as it is very difficult for me to leave the School and my 400 students. ” He also mentions a commitment in Moscow, for which he will have to suspend his classes for twelve days, and notes that he has only a few days of vacation, which he devotes to his personal work. Of particular interest is his discussion of his creative work and the pieces he is preparing. In particular, the composer mentions a symphony currently in progress, as well as *Le Chant de la Cloche* and his concert plans. He reflects on the constraints imposed by his duties at the Schola Cantorum and humorously expresses his regret at being unable to respond favorably to the many requests he receives: “Believe me, I very much regret not being able to make this trip, which would have amused and interested me, but my profession, alas, stands in the way.” He concludes by extending his compliments and best regards to his correspondent. A fine piece of correspondence attesting to Vincent d’Indy’s intense activity in the early 20th century, his role at the helm of the Schola Cantorum, and his international musical commitments. Some old creases, a few foxing spots, and slight signs of handling.
