CORTOT (Alfred) (1877–1962). Franco-Swiss pianist, one of the most famous performers and teachers of the 20th century. Autograph letter signed “A. Cortot” to Pierre Leroi, music critic. Paris, April 6, 1943. 1 page, oblong in-8 format, in blue ink, on letterhead of the Comité d’Organisation Professionnelle de la Musique, 7 Rue Jean-Mermoz, Paris (8th arrondissement). Preserved autograph envelope, addressed to Mr. Pierre Leroi, 142 Boulevard Berthier, Paris. Postage stamp and postmark dated April 6, 1943. A lovely thank-you letter written in the midst of the Occupation, in which Alfred Cortot expresses his gratitude for an article dedicated to his musical career. “When I tell you of my deep gratitude for the kindness you have shown me—a gesture that would make me happy, were it not for the fact that it leaves me feeling more flattered than I know what to do with myself!” The famous pianist goes on to praise the quality of his correspondent’s article: “Your article is of truly rare quality and does you credit—the praise you bestow upon me aside!” He concludes with a friendly closing and signs with his characteristic initials. Alfred Cortot, a leading interpreter of Chopin, Schumann, and Beethoven, was also an influential teacher and one of the founders of the École normale de musique de Paris. This letter is of particular interest because it is written on letterhead from the Comité d’Organisation Professionnelle de la Musique, an organization created under the Vichy regime, of which Cortot was a leading figure. It thus serves as a testament to his institutional activities during World War II. Condition: The letter is in good overall condition, with an original central crease. The envelope shows signs of handling, a few small tears, and marginal wear.
