CLÉMENT (Félix) (1822–1885). French organist, composer, and musicologist. Autograph signed letter concerning his vocal music method and organ instruction. Paris, October 19, 1876. 2 pages, in-8 format, in brown ink on white paper. Signed “Félix Clément.” An interesting autograph letter addressed to a young lady, in which Félix Clément discusses his method for teaching vocal music and offers to make his works on the organ, harmony, and accompaniment available to his correspondent. “I learned from the *Journal le Ménestrel* that you were going to start a music theory class on Rue des Sts-Pères. I have the honor of having a copy of my vocal music method delivered to you, and I ask that you try it out.” The musicologist highlights the encouraging results achieved using his method: “Results that once cost me a great deal of effort with other music theory methods are easily achieved with this one, especially for part-singing. ” He goes on to offer his correspondent a supplementary work: “If your instruction included elementary harmony and preparation for organ study, I would be happy to provide you with my comprehensive method for organ, harmony, and accompaniment. ” This correspondence attests to Félix Clément’s pedagogical concerns and his commitment to disseminating accessible and effective music teaching methods. It is also of particular interest for the history of vocal and music theory instruction in Paris during the second half of the 19th century. Félix Clément (1822–1885), an organist, composer, and musicographer, served notably as choirmaster at the churches of Saint-Augustin and Saint-Louis-d’Antin in Paris. As the author of numerous educational and historical works, he contributed to the development of music education and to the understanding of religious music. Notably, he published an important *History of Music from Ancient Times to the Present Day*. A beautiful letter of a professional and educational nature, directly illustrating Félix Clément’s work on music theory, harmony, and the organ. In good overall condition. Old creases, slight signs of handling, and a few subtle signs of age. The handwriting is particularly legible, with a beautiful autograph signature.
