BARENTZEN (Aline van) (1897–1981). A Franco-American pianist of Russian origin. A student of Isidor Philipp, she was a renowned performer and teacher at the Paris Conservatory. Autograph letter “Aline van Barentzen de Bouckenoghe” to a music critic. Aboard the Lipari, Buenos Aires, July 19, 1926. 3 pages, in-8 format, in blue ink, on letterhead of the Compagnie de navigation Sud-Atlantique. A lovely letter discussing her international career, her return to Europe, and her upcoming concerts. The pianist thanks her correspondent for an article about her latest Paris recital, which gave her great pleasure. She announces her upcoming return to Europe and hopes to see her correspondent again during her concerts. “I am very happy with my season in Europe—especially after so many years away. I have been so warmly welcomed everywhere I’ve played—I’m deeply touched by it… ” She emphasizes her attachment to France, despite her international career: “Not to mention that I will never be able to forget those who gave me the opportunity to perform the first season of this new chapter in my career. I am sad to leave Europe, and especially my dear France, my second homeland. ” She concludes her letter by expressing her warmest regards and signs it with her full name, along with her address in Buenos Aires, Argentina. An interesting account of the transatlantic tours and international career of a renowned pianist from the interwar period. A few creases, minor marks, and signs of wear.
