He became well known as a contributor to London exhibitions from 1818 when his painting A view of Newcastle Fish Market was accepted by the Royal Academy. He proceeded to exhibit widely, contributing to the British Institution, the Suffolk Street Galleries, and both the Old and New Watercolour Societies. Richardson helped set up the Northern Society of Painters in Watercolours and this Society became a meeting place for a number of talented watercolourists. Today, his works can be found in the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Government Art Collection.
