82 - Jacob Eichholtz (American, 1776-1842) Portrait of Mrs Benjamin Tevis (probably Mary Hunter), 1827 oil on canvas Unframed: 91 x 71.5 cm. (35 3/4 x 28 1/8 in.) Framed: 116.5 x 96 cm. (42 x 37 3/4 in.) Commissioned directly from the artist by Miss Sallie Tevis, Shelbyville, Kentucky; Thence by descent to her nieces, the Misses Sarah C. and Miriam Stevenson, Ohio; Thence by descent to the present owner; Private Collection, U.K. Literature: R. J. Beal, Jacob Eichholtz, 1776-1842; portrait painter of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia 1969, no. 827, page 237 I.L.K. Hostetter, “A Short Preface to a Copy of a Memorandum of Jacob Eichholtz, the Artist” and “List of Portraits and Paintings of Jacob Eichholtz Taken from Account Book — May 30, 1817,” in Papers Read before the Lancaster County Historical Society, November 6, 1925 XXIX, No. 9 (1925), pp. 107-111 Smithsonian American Art Museum, Inventories of American Painting and Sculpture, no. 81080813 The portrait of Mrs. Benjamin Tevis most likely depicts Mary Hunter, who married Philadelphia auctioneer Benjamin Tevis in 1824. Benjamin (born 1790) was the son of Robert Tevis and the brother of Joshua Tevis. Both Robert and Joshua, along with Joshua’s wife, also had their portraits painted by Jacob Eichholtz in 1827. The present work was commissioned by relatives of the sitter and has been in the family ever since. Previously, the subject was mistakenly identified as Mary Carroll of Baltimore, the wife of a different Benjamin Tevis who may have been a cousin of the Philadelphia auctioneer.1 References: 1R. J. Beal, Jacob Eichholtz, 1776-1842; portrait painter of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia 1969, p. 237, no. 827
