Romanov Dynasty—Tsarevich Nikolai Alexandrovich (who never ascended the throne), in uniform (carte de visite, full-length seated portrait). Saint Petersburg, “Svetopis’ Levickogo” Studio (ca. 1859). Vintage. Albumen print (from a wet collodion plate?), mounted on cardboard. Dimensions: 8.5 x 5.5 cm. Cardboard dimensions: 10.5 x 6 cm. The cardboard bears printed lettering (Cyrillic) of Sergei Levitsky’s studio (and his son Lev). Levitsky’s studio was frequented by representatives of Europe’s ruling houses; he advertised his services as the “Photographer of Two Empires—Russia and France.” Following the early death of Nikolai Alekseevich (known as Niks) in Nice in 1865, the line of succession (and also the planned marriage to the Danish Princess Dagmar) passed to the future Tsar Alexander III. - The cardboard has minimal brown spots; the photograph has a black spot to the right of the center of the image and other minimal spots. - Provenance: Formerly owned by Grand Duchess Maria Aleksandrovna (1853–1920), the younger daughter of Alexander II of Russia from his first marriage, Duchess of Edinburgh and Saxe-Coburg and Gotha; private collection in Switzerland; private collection in southern Germany.
