Romanov Dynasty - Tsar Alexander III of Russia (royal portrait, knee-length, standing), in uniform. Saint Petersburg, Levickij & Son Studio, (ca. 1886). Vintage. Albumen print, with a small blind-stamped inscription of the “Levickij” studio (Cyrillic) within the photograph, mounted on Skamoni cardstock. Dimensions: 29.5 x 19 cm. Cardboard dimensions: 32.5 x 19.5 cm. The cardboard features, among other things, the studio signature “Levickij” (Cyrillic) and the Imperial Eagle in gold embossing, along with the printed studio name “Levickij” (Cyrillic). On the reverse, a gold-printed stamp of the studio “Levitsky et Fils” (Latin). Following the expansion of his studio to Paris, where S. Levickij was also appointed personal photographer to Napoleon III, a new studio was built on the orders of Alexander III, featuring a private entrance for the royal family. Official portrait photograph. - The silver layer has numerous small, light, dot-shaped areas where the silver has worn away; the surface is in fairly good condition. The cardboard and one corner of the photograph are slightly stained. On the reverse, the gold imprint is slightly rubbed, with a later annotation in lead. - Provenance: Formerly owned by Grand Duchess Maria Aleksandrovna (1853–1920), the younger daughter of Alexander II of Russia from his first marriage, Duchess of Edinburgh and Saxe-Coburg and Gotha; private collection in Switzerland; private collection in southern Germany.
