Romanov Dynasty - Grand Duchess Ta'yana Nikolaevna. Cabinet card, full-length seated portrait as a child. Saint Petersburg, Wolf Jasvoin (Yasvoin) Studio. 1899–1900. Vintage. Albumen print. The photograph in the lower left corner bears the blind-embossed inscription “V. Yasvoin” (Cyrillic), mounted on cardboard. Dimensions: 9 x 6 cm. Cardboard dimensions: 16.5 x 11.5 cm. The cardboard (actually more of a carte de visite) bears, at the lower edge of the print, an embossed plate with the blind-embossed mark “W. Jasvoin” (Latin); the mounted paper cover by Skamoni on the reverse features lavishly designed studio advertising in gold print (embossing edges visible on the cardboard). The studio, which received numerous top honors, advertised reproductions “as good as from life” up to life-size. W. Jasvoin was the personal photographer of Grand Duke Georgij Aleksandrovich. Grand Duchess Tat'yana Nikolaevna was shot in 1917 along with the Tsar’s family and was subsequently canonized in 2000. - The cardboard is slightly browned and stained, with minimally bumped corners; the photograph, which is in good condition, is dated in lead on the right side, and there is an insignificant narrow remnant of mounting material at the top on the reverse. - Provenance: Formerly owned by Grand Duchess Maria Aleksandrovna (1853–1920), the younger daughter of Alexander II of Russia from his first marriage, Duchess of Edinburgh and Saxe-Coburg and Gotha; private collection in Switzerland; private collection in southern Germany.
