Portraits of Andy Warhol “in drag” from Christopher Makos’s 1981 series “Altered Image.” The American photographer, who had previously studied under Man Ray in Paris, collaborated extensively in New York with Andy Warhol, who declared him the “most modern photographer in America.” - Drawing inspiration from the collaboration between Marcel Duchamp and Man Ray, who in 1921 created the artistic persona “Rrose Sélavy” (Duchamp dressed in women’s clothing with a hat and fur collar), Warhol and Makos developed the concept for the “Altered Image” series in the summer of 1981 in New York City. After shopping together at an elegant wig shop on 57th Street, they locked themselves away in Makos’ studio for two days to celebrate Andy Warhol’s female alter ego in 349 photographs. - Partially lightly scuffed, corners minimally bumped.
