Voigt, Bruno. Germany 1944. Topographic map of Europe with a collaged copperplate engraving, featuring a drawing in watercolor and white overpaint. Monogram at the bottom; the sheet is dated twice; inscribed on the reverse as “Losses during recovery, May 1944” (?). 1944. Image dimensions: 23 x 23.5 cm. Sheet dimensions: 44.5 x 56.5 cm. Bruno Voigt (1912–1988) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Weimar and was a student of Walter Klemm. His works are influenced by Otto Dix, George Grosz, Rudolf Schlichter, and Karl Arnold. He is considered a representative of New Objectivity. - Here, too, Voigt remains true to his tradition of strongly criticizing the Nazi regime: a gorilla wearing a Wehrmacht uniform and holding a skull, with the portrait of Kaiser Wilhelm I filling the space, dominates Central Europe. The collage was created shortly after Voigt was seriously wounded on the Eastern Front in February 1944. - The card is browned and rubbed, partially stained, with an inherent center fold that is torn from the top and bottom down to the collage; it has brown spots along the edges; the drawing is slightly rubbed but in good condition. *
