Uhlmann, Hans. Untitled. (Couple Embracing). Wash drawing in ink on chamois-colored vellum. Monogrammed and dated "H.U.46." in the lower right corner. 1946. Sheet dimensions: 20 x 12.5 cm. Uhlmann first studied mechanical engineering, then sculpture, and taught at the Technical University in Berlin from 1926 to 1933. During this time, he created his first geometric heads, which he exhibited in 1930 at the Fritz Gurlitt Gallery in Berlin. In 1933, he was arrested during an anti-fascist leafleting campaign and was imprisoned in Berlin-Tegel until 1935. His works were denounced as “degenerate” and removed from museums. After his release, Uhlmann created constructive metal sculptures and exhibited them at the Gerd Rosen Gallery in 1945. In 1950, he was appointed professor of sculpture at the Berlin University of the Arts. Many of his geometric figurations are now located in public spaces. - Mounted on cardboard (50 x 40 cm) on the reverse, slightly browned and stained, with traces of studio use.
