Spindel, Ferdinand. Untitled. Foam object, painted white, in a box frame with a Plexiglas panel. Signed and dated in red on the back. 1971. Dimensions: 30 x 80 x 10 cm. A large-scale work by Ferdinand Spindel (1913–1980), who is best known for his abstract-organic foam works, reliefs, and material paintings. - Alongside Piero Manzoni and Agostino Bonalum, Spindel developed a new aesthetic using this malleable, soft material. Spindel, who lived and worked as chairman of the Halfmannshof artists’ colony in Gelsenkirchen-Ückendorf from 1963 to 1973, was in close contact with the artists of the ZERO group in the 1960s, while he discovered foam as a medium and co-founded the artist group B1 in 1969. - The foam object has a small surface tear at the top center and a small tear with material loss on the lower right side; otherwise, it is only minimally stained. The box frame has light soiling on the inside; the exterior is somewhat dusty; the bottom panel shows water stains on the underside; the back panel has two cracks and a pierced hanging mechanism; the frame edges are more heavily bumped; and the corner joints are partially cracked.
