Klinger, Max. Intermezzi. Etchings. Op. IV. Series of 7 (including 1 duplicate; instead of 12) aquatint etchings on rolled-out China paper. Nuremberg, Th. Ströfer, 1881. Sheet dimensions: 63 x 45 cm. Included are plates IV–V and VII–X; plate VII is duplicated. - Singer 55–56, 58–63: “The prints do not follow a coherent train of thought. The title suggests that these are works Klinger produced in between and alongside his work on his complete series. Only the last print offers any inspiration for an attempt at an explanation. It depicts a satirical race between three of humanity’s plagues. Love, portrayed here with few pleasant traits, races ahead, but close behind comes an even worse torment—death—and even death is only slightly ahead of the afterlife. The master seems to mock the horrors of the afterlife.” - All etchings are inscribed at the bottom margin with the respective number and “Max Klinger.” - 2 sheets with slight water marks, some with corner creases (mostly slight), and occasional light staining.
