Brüning, Max. Untitled. (In the Boudoir). Pencil on sketchpad paper. Signed, inscribed with the location, and dated “Charleville 1917” in the lower left corner. Sheet size: 45 x 27 cm. The sketch was created during Max Brüning’s (1887–1968) deployment on the Western Front in Charleville, where the main headquarters of German Emperor Wilhelm II and the Supreme Army Command were located. Conscripted in 1915, Brüning worked as an artistic contributor to the German war newspaper. He also gave drawing lessons to Crown Prince Wilhelm, who served as a general on the Western Front, leading to a lifelong friendship between the “Professor,” as Wilhelm called him, and the Crown Prince. - Mounted on cardboard on the reverse, minimally browned, with only a few small stains along the edges.
