Ackermann, Max. Two Figures. Two chalk drawings on brown paper. Originally mounted together on cardboard, signed, titled, and dated on the reverse. 1939. Sheet dimensions: 23.8 x 15.4 cm and 24.9 x 13.6 cm. Works created in Hornstaad on Lake Constance by Max Ackermann (1887–1975), who joined the Höri Circle in 1936 and moved to the Untersee after being barred from teaching in Stuttgart. For a short time, Ackermann took over Helmuth Macke’s studio in Hemmenhofen and maintained close contact with Otto Dix, who had “emigrated” to Hemmenhofen that same year. In 1937, as part of the “Degenerate Art” campaign, five of Ackermann’s works were verifiably confiscated from the Württemberg State Gallery in Stuttgart and subsequently destroyed. — The drawings, which were originally mounted together on a single backing board, have been separated and mounted on two backing boards of equal size. A mounting board on the reverse bearing a label from the Berlin “galerie gerd rosen,” where Ackermann exhibited in 1949. — Securely mounted at several points on the reverse; discolored. — Provenance: From the estate of the Ackermann family.
