Ackermann, Max. Untitled. Pastel on glassine, mounted on cardboard. Circa 1935. Sheet dimensions: 10 x 17.4 cm. An exceptionally vibrant work by Max Ackermann (1887–1975), likely from his early Lake Constance period. He had already met Gertrud Ostermayer (b. 1894) in Hornstaad in 1932; she was planning to build a house on the Untersee. From 1933 onward, while in “internal exile,” he spent time there regularly, took over art instruction for guests at her “vacation home,” and finally moved permanently to Hornstaad in 1936, where he joined the Höri Circle and married Ostermayer, after he had been barred from teaching in Stuttgart, where he had founded his seminar on “Absolute Painting” in 1930. On Lake Constance, Ackermann briefly took over Helmuth Macke’s studio in Hemmenhofen and maintained close contact with Otto Dix, who had “emigrated” to Hemmenhofen that same year. - The glassine is mounted on cardboard and folded over on the reverse; the reverse is mounted under a mat in the corners, slightly wavy; the vibrant pastel chalks show hardly any wear. - Provenance: From the estate of the Ackermann family.
