Avant-garde - Russia - Varvara F. Stepanova and Aleksandr M. Rodchenko. *Pervaya konnaya* (The First Cavalry Army). Designed by Varvara Stepanova and Aleksandr Rodchenko, with numerous, predominantly photographic illustrations (30 of which are mounted), some in duotone or color. Moscow, Ogiz-Izogiz, 1937 (printed in December 1936). 394 pp. (including 4 pages mounted side-by-side to form a panorama), 8 bound insert sheets (2 half-sheets and 6 special formats, including 3 double-sheets). 36 x 31 cm. Original illustrated faux-leather binding over linden wood covers (back cover slightly stained). First edition. — Karasik, p. 158ff. — Not listed in Rowell/Wye; Hellyer lists only the second, revised edition without the original binding. - A lavish volume published by an editorial board, with texts by O. Leonidov. The design was conceived by V. Stepanova, who executed it in collaboration with A. Rodchenko. The majority of the illustrations are phototype or photo-mezzotint reproductions of photographs by A. Rodchenko and the photographers Mihail Prehner, Ivan Shagin, Arkadij Shajhet, as well as images from the archives of the publisher and the Red Army. Civil War posters and caricatures by D. Moor, the Kukryniksy, B. Ioganson, and others are also reproduced primarily as color lithographs. Overall, the visual material was arranged in the style of a film (a cinematic concept on the subject had been rejected shortly before). Production involved coordinating work in Moscow and Leningrad across the four participating printing plants and two paper mills. - Some of the pages, which are in places slightly stained by fingerprints and have small spots; two pages have later lead markings in the margins; the title page and one other page have stamped markings that have been erased, as well as small inventory notes. - Due to censorship, 5 sheets featuring portraits of “enemies of the people” are missing; their names were also redacted multiple times in the text, and one portrait each was cut out or crossed out in lead (A. Egorov). In doing so, the censor overlooked the portrait of another “traitor” (B. Gorbachev). - A few loose pages have been professionally reattached. - Overall in good condition. *
