Germany - Potsdam - Michiels, Johann Franz. The Roman Baths in Sanssouci Park. Original photograph. Vintage. Salted paper print, mounted on thin cardboard. This one bears a dry stamp: Cologne, F. C. Eisen, 1856. Print: 23.7 x 38.9 cm. Mount: 39.7 x 59 cm. A rare example of early Potsdam photography. Michiels is best known for his photographs of Cologne Cathedral. Four of his large-format, sharply defined images of Potsdam were shown in 2006 as part of the exhibition “Auslöser Potsdam”; others are known only from an advertisement that the publisher Eisen published in 1858 in the Leipzig “Illustrirten Zeitung” (reproduced in Heidtmann, *Wie das Photo ins Buch kam*, p. 55). - This photograph shows the entrance area and gardener’s house of the Roman Baths, built between 1829 and 1840 according to plans by Frederick William IV and Schinkel, which are currently undergoing extensive renovation. - Slightly faded; the backing cardboard has faint creases, but is otherwise in excellent condition.
